Government Official States Ministry of Defence Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Told to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, while personnel have been told to refrain from discussing classified matters in all cars.

Security Guidance for MoD Staff

During a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while riding in Chinese cars.

The minister explained that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however noted that safety is a concern in all modern cars.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any car, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Security Context

The announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

This broader security environment highlights the significance of robust measures and caution in every areas of government activities, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
